Case Study 101: Custom FRP Abstract Wave Sculpture with Jade-Like Finish – Delivered to a Luxury Hotel in California

Project Overview: A bespoke FRP (Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic) abstract sculpture, inspired by surging ocean waves and finished with a premium jade-like texture, was successfully exported by WEMEDEC Sculpture team to California and installed at a high-end hotel. From initial client consultation to final delivery, the entire process was completed in approximately 60 days.

From Concept to California: A 60-Day Journey

This project began with close collaboration between the design team and the client in California, United States. After refining the concept, we moved into the fabrication phase, leveraging FRP’s unique advantages—lightweight, high strength, corrosion resistance, and exceptional formability—to bring the dynamic wave design to life.

Production Workflow

  • 3D Modeling & Foam Molding: To ensure precise proportions, WEMEDEC sculpture team used foam modeling as the primary sculpting tool, allowing the team to meticulously calibrate surface curvature and ensure smooth, uninterrupted arcs.
  • Mold Making: Based on the final sculpted model, we created high-quality molds. For this project, we utilized fiberglass-reinforced molds, which allow for multiple production runs while maintaining excellent detail reproduction. The mold-making process involved applying a silicone rubber layer over the original model for superior detail capture, then backing it with a fiberglass shell for structural support.
  • FRP Layup: Using the hand lay-up technique—the most widely used method for FRP sculpture production—we applied layers of fiberglass mat and resin to build up the sculpture’s shell to the required thickness of 4–6mm. This method is particularly well-suited for complex, flowing shapes like our wave design.
  • Joining & Seam Finishing: Individual molded sections were carefully assembled and bonded together. All seams were hand-ground and polished to achieve a flawless, continuous surface—“visible joints without a trace”.
  • Internal Reinforcement: A lightweight internal steel skeleton was pre-installed to provide structural strength while maintaining the sculpture’s overall stability. WEMEDEC always uses the best material for the internal metal structure for the longest lifetime.
  • Packaging & Shipping: Due to its size and international destination, the sculpture was secured in an ISPM-15 compliant, fumigation-free wooden crate and shipped from Tianjin Port, China.

Design & Aesthetic Highlights

This abstract wave concept sculpture’s design captures the dynamic energy of rising waves, featuring a primary surface that flows upward in one continuous, sweeping arc. The lower section coils inward, creating open, negative spaces that add a sense of lightness and rhythm to the overall form.

Premium Jade-Like Surface Finish

Thanks to FRP’s exceptional surface treatment capabilities, WEMEDEC sculpture engineers achieved a sophisticated jade-like finish that emulates the look and feel of natural stone:

  • Jade Texture: Using specialized resin formulations and multi-step polishing techniques, WEMEDEC created a smooth, translucent surface with a warm, even luster.
  • Dual-Tone Accent: The sculpture features subtle two-tone detailing, with the base section treated to complement the jade finish, enhancing visual depth and sophistication.

Attention to Detail

All surfaces were meticulously hand-sanded and polished using automotive-grade fillers and paints, ensuring a flawless, high-gloss finish free from pinholes, air bubbles, or imperfections. This level of craftsmanship is typical of high-end FRP fabrication.

Versatile Visual Impact

The sculpture’s upward, flowing motion makes it an ideal centerpiece for luxury hotels, commercial atriums, and high-end residential projects. Under natural light, the jade-like surface interacts dynamically, offering a grand silhouette from a distance and intricate textures up close. It serves as both a focal point of visual art and an efficient aesthetic enhancement tool for modern spaces. WEMEDEC has finished many similar abstract FRP sculptures for clients.

Why FRP for Art & Sculpture?

FRP (Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic) is increasingly chosen for high-end sculptural works due to its:

  • Lightweight Strength: Easier to transport and install compared to metal or stone, yet highly durable.
  • Design Freedom: Capable of realizing complex, flowing forms that would be difficult or impossible with traditional materials.
  • Versatile Finishes: Can replicate the appearance of jade, bronze, stone, copper, and more with remarkable fidelity.
  • Weather Resistance: Suitable for both indoor and covered outdoor applications.
